CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Halloween had finally arrived in Blackwood, and Joey yearned for the years past when his biggest problem was determining which costume he would wear. Now there were other issues at hand.
School had just ended, and the boys were finalizing their plan of attack. While doing so, they had all learned of Joeyâs eerie nightmare about Bob Smah.
âWhy would I have this nightmare now?â Joey asked. âWhy all of sudden?â
âItâs because of everything thatâs been going on,â Barry said thoughtfully. âOne of us was bound to have nightmares at some point.â
âI guess,â Joey said, wanting to believe his friend. âBut it didnât feel like just any old nightmare. It felt likeâ¦a warning.â
The three boys continued to walk their bikes to Michaelâs store. Upon arriving there, Joey tugged open the front door and they entered.
âVelcome to my coffin!â said Michael, who suddenly appeared behind his front counter wearing a very cheap vampire cape. The boys turned in alarm and saw Michael, who curled his hands like a vampire and laughed in a terrible Romanian accent.
âMichael, what gives?â Joey demanded, leaning against the counter. âWhy did you tell my dad weâve been messing around with the Smah house?â
âIâm sorry,â Michael said, his voice returning to normal. He lowered his cape-covered arms. âWas I not supposed to?â
âNO!â all three boys shouted at him, and Michael stepped back in surprise, raising his hands in surrender.
âWhoa, sorry!â he said. âBut your father and I have been friends ever since we were kids and we threw those moonpies at Sister Tabitha. We tell each other everything!â
âFrom now on, anything we talk to you about remains a secretâgot it?â Joey asked.
âIâm not sure I can agree to that, Joey, â Michael said. âIt would be irresponsible of me if I knew you were doing something potentially dangerous and I didnât tell your parents.â
âOh, come on,â Joey said. âIf thatâs the way youâre going to be, then we canât tell you any more secrets.â
âOh, come on!â Michael said, sounding even more childish than Joey. âInclude me! I want to be included!â
âYou have to swear to secrecy, Michael,â Joey warned. âWe have to be able to trust you completely. And we canât do that if you run and gossip about us with my parents.â
âFine,â Michael agreed, and held up one hand in Scoutâs Honor.
âGood,â Joey said, exhaling in relief. âMy dad yelled at me because of your tattling, you know. If you see him, donât tell him weâre going back to that house tonight. In fact, donât even tell him I was here today.â
âYouâre the boss,â Michael said. âApparently. Say, what do you need, anyway? Some werewolf pellets? Perhaps a shrunken head from New Guinea?â
âWe donât have time for anything silly,â Joey answered. âWe need something to ward off ghosts. Got anything like that?â He looked around the store as if he would spot something immediately.
âI sure do,â Michael said, grinning. âI have all kinds of stuff: potions, blessed religious relics, texts, t-shirtsââ
âWe need the most powerful thing you have!â Joey demanded.
